ButterflyDreaming is not a conventional social media platform — its interaction model is genuinely novel. Two anonymous users are paired randomly, explore a shared field of symbolic text fragments together, and may collaboratively weave a short new text that joins a growing public network. An AI modulator shapes the space between them throughout.

ButterflyDreaming is designed around radical anonymity, ephemeral encounter, and the wellbeing of participants. These commitments raise genuine ethical questions — about consent, safety, content moderation, the responsibilities of an anonymous platform, and the role of AI in a space designed for reflective human encounter.

The symbolic field that seeds ButterflyDreaming — the body of poetry, myth, folktale, and philosophy that participants encounter and weave from — is called the Corpus. It is the raw material of every dyadic encounter, and its composition matters enormously. A corpus that is culturally narrow will produce encounters that are culturally narrow.

ButterflyDreaming is primarily a text platform — but text can also be used as a seed or code to invoke richer media. A planned extension of the platform will allow specific words or phrases within a dyadic encounter to trigger lightweight media modules running locally on the user’s device — generating or playing back music, visual art, or other media responses without any data leaving the user’s machine.

ButterflyDreaming is a small, non-commercial, volunteer-led project at an early stage of development. It needs people — with a wide range of skills, perspectives, and forms of engagement — to help it grow from a well-documented idea into a working platform.
